Duotone Effect Maker — FAQ

Quick answers about two-tone photo effects

What is a duotone effect?
Duotone maps the brightness of every pixel onto a gradient between two colors: dark areas take the shadow color, bright areas take the highlight color, and midtones blend in between.
Does duotone reduce image quality?
No. The mapping only changes color values — resolution and detail are untouched, and PNG downloads are lossless.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
Never. The effect runs on the canvas in your browser. Nothing leaves your device, and the page keeps working offline after it loads.
Can I use my own colors?
Yes. The Shadows and Highlights color pickers accept any colors. Click a preset first for good starting values, then adjust either side.
What does the blend slider do?
At 100% the photo is fully remapped to your two colors. Lower values mix the duotone with the original photo, which softens the effect while keeping the palette tint.
Which photos work best for duotone?
Photos with clear contrast and simple compositions read best. Busy scenes can turn to noise — try lowering blend or raising contrast first. For raw negatives first, use our color inversion tool.
