From a gentle softening to complete anonymity — pick a block size, then fine-tune with the slider.

Retro 12px

Chunky 8-bit game vibes. Great for giving modern photos a deliberately low-fi, nostalgic character.

Chunky 20px

Big bold blocks where only shapes and color fields survive — strong graphic poster energy.

Total abstraction. Nothing identifiable remains — perfect for truly hiding faces, plates, or documents.

Extreme 48px

Maximum block size: the photo becomes a grid of pure color tiles, like a minimalist color study.

Pixelate Image — FAQ

Quick answers about turning photos into pixels

What does pixelating an image do?
It divides the photo into a grid of blocks and replaces every block with a single average color. Small blocks soften detail; large blocks turn the image into abstract color tiles.
Is pixelating good enough to hide faces?
At 24px or larger on a typical photo, faces become unrecognizable. For sensitive material, we recommend the largest block size that still looks acceptable, or our blur area tool which lets you target only the sensitive region.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
Never. Pixelation runs on the canvas in your browser. Nothing leaves your device, and the page works offline once loaded.
Does pixelating reduce the image resolution?
The output keeps your photo’s original pixel dimensions — the detail is averaged into blocks, but the file stays full size. That also means you can pixelate first and enlarge later.
What pixel size should I use?
4-8px for a subtle texture, 10-16px for a retro look, 24px or more to hide faces and text. The presets are good starting points for each use.
Can I pixelate only part of a photo?
Yes — use our blur face and area tool, which supports pixelate-style blocks inside a draggable region while the rest of the photo stays untouched.
