Six Matte Styles, One Click

Every preset lifts the blacks a little differently — pick one, then fine-tune fade, contrast, and brightness.

Soft Matte

Gently lifted blacks with a whisper of desaturation — the everyday matte that flatters almost any photo.

Film Matte

A stronger black lift with muted color, echoing the soft blacks of scanned film. Ideal for lifestyle and travel sets.

Dreamy Fade

Heavy fade, softened color, and a brightness lift for an airy, ethereal look. Lovely for weddings and portraits.

Matte Noir

Matte blacks plus extra contrast for a moody, editorial feel that keeps some punch despite the faded shadows.

Pastel Wash

Maximum fade with muted saturation — colors drift toward soft pastels for a light, springlike aesthetic.

Faded Print

The balanced look of a photo book page: visible fade, gentle desaturation, and natural midtones throughout.

Fade / Matte Filter — FAQ

Quick answers about the matte look

What does a matte fade actually do?
It lifts the darkest tones so true black becomes dark gray, and often softens the brightest whites. The result is a gentle, faded feel like a printed photo on matte paper.
Does the matte filter reduce image quality?
No. It only remaps tonal values — resolution and detail are unchanged, and PNG downloads stay lossless. Extreme fade can crush shadow detail, so keep the slider moderate for important shots.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
Never. The grading runs in your browser on the HTML5 canvas. Your photo stays on your device, and the tool works offline once loaded.
How much fade should I use?
Most photos look best between 10% and 25%. Past that, shadows can turn muddy. Pastel Wash uses 30% for a deliberate pastel effect that suits bright, airy scenes.
How is this different from lowering contrast?
Lowering contrast darkens and flattens everything toward the middle. Matte fade specifically raises the black point while keeping midtones and highlights closer to normal — that is what creates the printed-matte character.
Can I combine matte with other effects?
Yes. Popular pairings: a warm base from our sepia photo filter before matting, or convert to grayscale first with the black and white converter for a monochrome matte.
